About Lough Melvin SAC

Lough Melvin SAC straddles the border between County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and County Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland, encompassing one of the most ecologically valuable sites on the island. Covering primarily the lake and its immediate surroundings, this SAC protects the exceptional water quality and habitat diversity of Lough Melvin, which is notable for its distinct variety of endemic and rare aquatic species, including the unique Lough Melvin charr (Salvelinus grayi), alongside rare bryophytes and other flora. The lake's limestone bedrock and natural hydrology combine to maintain a highly oligotrophic environment, supporting rare fish populations and a wealth of aquatic plants. Its designation as a Special Area of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive emphasizes the importance of safeguarding these habitats against pollution, invasive species, and unsustainable land use practices. Outdoor recreation in and around the SAC attracts anglers targeting native brown trout and the unique charr, birdwatchers spotting diverse waterfowl, and kayakers enjoying the clear waters framed by rugged hills. Historical interest includes nearby archaeological sites that reflect centuries of human interaction with this landscape. The area's appeal lies in its tranquil beauty, ecological significance, and the unspoiled backdrop that provides a respite from more commercialized recreation hubs. Due to cross-border management, conservation efforts and visitor information are coordinated between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland authorities, ensuring protection alongside sustainable enjoyment of this remarkable freshwater environment.
